The 200 milliseconds that decide everything
Why some websites feel expensive and others cheap, even though they show the same thing. It is almost always the timing.
There is a moment that decides whether a website feels high quality. It lasts about two tenths of a second and happens right after a click.
If the page responds immediately and the motion eases out calmly, it feels expensive. If it responds late, it feels sluggish. If it responds immediately and is done immediately, it feels cheap, like a sliding door slamming shut.
The art is in the curve. A movement that starts quickly and slows down gently feels physical; that is how things move in the real world. A uniform movement feels like a machine.
I didn’t learn this feeling at a screen. I learned it behind the decks. A transition that comes an eighth too early kills the energy. Nobody in the crowd could say what happened. But everybody feels it.
That is exactly why, on every project, I spend time on something that never appears as a line in a quote: tuning milliseconds.
